Dr Jason Diamond Shares Facial Plastic Surgery Facts You Should Know

Many people ponder whether or not cosmetic/plastic and reconstructive surgery or treatments are right for them.  While some patients have no choice (they may have a condition where plastic or reconstructive surgery is a necessity) the majority elect to do it because they wish to look bettersuch as having more or less hair; lessen facial wrinkles, a smaller nose and much more.

Over the years cosmetic surgery (as well as non-surgical treatments such as Botox and chemical peels) has become more common and while a face-lift and hair transplant procedures can cost over $7000, the affordability along with the general acceptability of these surgeries and procedures are more common than ever.  It has been reported that more than a billion dollars per year is being spent on cosmetic procedures, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

The AAFPRS  is the world's largest association for plastic surgery representing 2700 facial and reconstructive surgeons globally and recently conducted an in-depth study on trends associated with plastic and reconstructive surgery. The study looked at the following:

  • Statistics and insights for facial plastic surgery
  • Trend information regarding the frequency of both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery

Here are some facts in terms of the popularity of  various procedures:

  • AAFPRS member surgeons report performing an average of 945 facial cosmetic surgical, cosmetic non-surgical, reconstructive and revision procedures per surgeon in 2012.
  •         Two-thirds (642) are made up by cosmetic non-surgical procedures.
  • In 2012, the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures were: rhinoplasty followed by blepharoplasty, facelift, ablative skin resurfacing, and septoplasty.
  • The most common cosmetic nonsurgical procedures were Botox and hyaluronic acid.
This data in the 2012 study differed slightly from 2011 but not too much.  The AAFPRS reports that the “…overall number of procedures in 2012 is similar to last year. Those showing increases are facelifts and blepharoplasty, mostly driven by procedures on women.”

So, now that we have an idea of what is popular, what procedures were not so popular?  The AAFPRS reports that hair transplants, vampire facelifts, eyebrow transplants or collagen/cosmoderm/ cosmoplasty procedures were among the least performed in 2012.

Alternatives to surgery are also very popular.  In 2012, the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures were: rhinoplasty followed by blepharoplasty, facelift, ablative skin resurfacing, and septoplasty. The most common cosmetic nonsurgical procedures were Botox and hyaluronic acid.
